The League for Social Justice unequivocally condemns the shocking and disgraceful invasion of the Lagos State House of Assembly by personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police. This heavy-handed, authoritarian siege on a democratic institution is nothing short of an assault on the rule of law and an insult to the people of Lagos State.
Sealing off the offices of the Speaker, her Deputy, and the Clerk under the cover of dawn reeks of state-sponsored intimidation and signals a dangerous descent into dictatorship. What justification exists for storming the Assembly—the people’s house—with armed security forces? Is the Nigerian government so allergic to democracy that it now resorts to Gestapo-style tactics to settle internal political disputes?
The DSS and Police are not political enforcers—their duty is to protect Nigerians, not act as tools for political vendettas. The use of state security agencies to strong-arm elected officials and manipulate legislative processes is a grave abuse of power that threatens the very foundations of democracy.
Let’s be clear: this is not just about Lagos—this is about Nigeria’s democracy. Today, it is the Lagos State Assembly under siege; tomorrow, it could be the National Assembly or any other democratic institution. This is how tyranny takes root—when silence replaces outrage, and impunity replaces accountability.
We demand:
A full investigation into the illegal raid and those who sanctioned it.
An end to the use of security forces as political weapons against perceived opponents.
Lagosians, Nigerians, defenders of democracy—this is the time to speak out! Share this message, raise your voices, and demand accountability. Democracy is not a privilege—it is our right.
