Public Statement: Commending Governor Zulum’s Initiative and Advocating Broader Support Across Nigeria

We commend the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, for taking a significant step toward alleviating the struggles of farmers in insurgency-affected areas. The decision to subsidize petrol to N600 per litre for irrigation farming in Bama town demonstrates an understanding of the immediate challenges faced by these resilient communities. This initiative is a welcome relief and a much-needed boost to agriculture in a region that has endured immense hardship due to Boko Haram insurgency.

While this is a laudable move, it is important to recognize that the burdens of high fuel costs and economic hardship extend beyond the farming community. The broader population across Borno State continues to bear the weight of government inefficiency, mismanagement, and infrastructural deficits. Families, small businesses, and everyday citizens struggle daily with soaring costs that threaten their livelihoods.

We urge the state government to expand this subsidy program to benefit all citizens, particularly those outside the farming sector who are equally impacted by economic instability. Such an extension would send a powerful message of inclusivity and shared responsibility while alleviating widespread suffering.

Furthermore, we call on all state governments across Nigeria to emulate Governor Zulum’s bold leadership. Fuel prices, economic challenges, and infrastructural deficiencies are not unique to Borno State. Millions of Nigerians in every corner of the country face similar struggles daily. State governments must recognize their role in addressing these systemic issues by implementing targeted interventions, subsidies, and policies tailored to their citizens’ unique needs.

Governor Zulum’s proactive approach sets a strong precedent for state-led solutions in tackling national crises. Other state governors should prioritize innovative measures to ensure that vulnerable populations—farmers, traders, artisans, and everyday citizens—receive the support they need to thrive amidst economic uncertainty.

Moreover, addressing these challenges requires a more comprehensive approach. Investments in local refineries, efficient fuel distribution systems, and alternative energy sources could ensure affordable access for all citizens in the long term.

Governor Zulum’s efforts offer hope and demonstrate the power of responsive leadership. We encourage other state leaders to follow suit, ensuring that no Nigerian, regardless of their state, is left behind. Together, we can turn short-term relief into sustainable progress for every citizen of this great nation.
